The Good Wife: Predictions to Ponder for the Season Four Premiere

"I Fought the Law" - The Good Wife's Season Premiere Starts with a Bang
Season 4 Pre-Premiere| Post Date: August 21, 2012

______________________________________________________________

It’s official:  CBS has released 18 photos* and an episode synopsis of the season four premiere of The Good Wife, entitled “I Fought the Law.”  Let’s start by stating the obvious: I’m excited, elated, hyperventilating. So much so, I’m cutting the small talk (and not just because all I can do is hum “I fought the law and the law won” while writing this) but because there is so much to discuss.

Direct from CBS:
“I Fought the Law” – Alicia goes on the offensive when Zach is targeted by an overzealous state trooper.  Meanwhile, after her ex-husband tracked her down in last season’s finale, Kalinda decides to stand her ground rather than continue hiding, and Diane and Will delve into the firm’s financial problems, on the fourth season premiere of THE GOOD WIFE, Sunday, Sept. 30 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Kristin Chenoweth guest stars as political reporter Peggy Byrne, Nathan Lane guest stars as Clarke Hayden, the firm’s appointed trustee and British actor Marc Warren guest stars as Nick, Kalinda’s ex-husband.

Bonus:  According to TV Line, Nick wastes no time in meeting Alicia and Cary – “As a potential new client.”

Breaking it down: Premiere Predictions to Ponder

I Fought the Law – Following the ever-clever naming scheme The Good Wife has worked with since season one (the number of words in the title correlating to the season number), this premiere episode continues the tradition with a catchy and musical title. The big question: Who’s fighting the law?

Alicia goes on the offensive when Zach is targeted by an overzealous state trooper – Ah ha.  I just answered my own question.  By the looks of things, the beloved (Alicia’s words, not mine) Florrick children get caught up in some kind of trouble.  I’m making my shocked face right now and trying very hard not to blame the whole thing on Grace.  It’s going to be the happiest of all days when these two get dropped off at College.  But I digress.

Meanwhile, after her ex-husband tracked her down in last season’s finale, Kalinda decides to stand her ground rather than continue hiding – The big news here is that apparently Kalinda doesn’t shoot whoever is lurking on the other side of her door.  While that’s mildly disappointing (because, be honest, aren’t you curious as to where Kalinda would hide a body?), it probably makes sense.  Could this mean the looming figure with the slow and steady knock isn’t Nick, but rather someone else entirely?  Perhaps Alicia?  They are, after all, best friends again.  Or at least they will be.   If Alicia did as she should have and left Peter and the kids to eat their pizza in Highland Park, this is a viable open.  We all know Alicia kept K’s change of address from season two for a rainy day.  This could be that day.  Or, perhaps it’s Will on the other side of the door.  When last we saw these two drinking buddies, K was saying her goodbyes and asking for a cash advance.  Maybe Will is stopping by to convince her not to go?  Whatever happens, I hope we get to see more of Kalinda’s house (and, with any luck, at the same time, we’ll see Cary in her room helping patch up her sledge-hammered wall).  Pass the spackle, things are about to get interesting.

Diane and Will delve into the firm’s financial problems – Lockhart Gardner has financial problems?  Oh. Wait. When haven’t they had issues with cash flow?  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: This firm needs an accountant… and it can’t be anyone David Lee knows, because the last thing this firm needs are rigged books. With Diane and Will’s tag-teamed brilliance, one would think they could find someone to make a spreadsheet and use the “auto sum” button.  I look forward to the day when someone at the firm can balance a budget (much like the day when Team Gardner reunites), but until then, I’ll hold my breath and watch Lockhart Gardner sink like a brick in water.

Meanwhile, I can’t imagine what Cary is thinking right now.  I mean, he was originally let go because of cutbacks.  I’m sure he’s done the math: Last man in = first man out.  Only this time the SA’s Office isn’t an option.   And then there’s Eli, who is hopefully more focused on Peter’s campaign than he is with his partnership assets, but with David Lee lurking in the wings, there always seems to be an available shaker of salt to rub into Eli’s buttoned-up wounds.

Nick wastes no time in meeting Alicia and Cary – “As a potential new client.” – I. Have. No. Words.  The only thing that could make this better would be having Nick, Alicia and Cary trapped in an elevator together.  I can’t even begin to imagine what this meeting is going to look like, but I have a feeling it’s going to go straight to the top of my #IDidntSeeThatComing list that I’m already starting for season four.  The best part about all of this is that I have a feeling Nick’s return will bring Alicia and Kalinda closer together.  Kalinda’s staying in Chicago for Alicia and that’s the first step.  My prediction: While Kalinda is going to struggle with the “honesty policy” she has with Alicia, their divine relationship will be the ultimate force against the leather-clad Nick.  If all else fails, we know what’s hidden in Kalinda’s trunk.

With all of the musings around The Good Wife, I can’t help but question whether or not season four will be the new season two (aka, the best season yet?).  What are you most looking forward to when it comes to the premiere?

I fought the law and the law won."  Honestly.  I couldn't be any more in love with this show.

Broadway's Best Joins Television's Finest on The Good Wife

Triple-threat, Kristin Chenoweth to join The Good Wife in Season Four
Summer 2012 Hiatus | Post Date: June 26, 2012 | Updated: August 13, 2012

Article Update: After having been in an on-set accident while filming The Good Wife on July 11, Kristin Chenoweth has made public her decision to leave the show.  "It is with deep regret to inform everyone that due to my injuries, I am unable to return to The Good Wife" notes Chenoweth.  With just one episode under her belt, I can only hope she will make a speedy recovery and return to the hallowed halls of Lockhart Gardner as a journalist on a mission to bring down the Florrick campaign.

It's official.  This is the most exciting week for casting in the history of The Good Wife.  It's a big claim, I know, but I'm willing to sing it, dance it, act it and mime it - Season four of The Good Wife is going to feature the single most star-studded ensemble cast on television.

As if the June 25th announcement of Marc Warren and Maura Tierney joining the cast of the Good Wife wasn't big enough, news of triple-threat Kristin Chenoweth’s recurring role on the show has quickly become the delicious icing atop The Good Wife’s casting coup cake.  According to a press release from CBS, Chenoweth’s character will debut in The Good Wife’s season premiere as a political journalist slated to report on Peter’s campaign for Governor.  You can bet news of the Florrick’s estranged marriage won’t take long to hit the press which means Eli will be quickly back to work doing what he does best: acting as a political puppet master.

I, for one, can’t help but wonder what other implications having a top-of-her-game journalist around will bring to the show.  Will the beloved Team Gardner romance of season three get blown out of the water?  Will Chenoweth’s character befriend staff at Lockhart Gardner to get the inside scoop on Alicia?  Will Grace and Zach end up caught in the middle (or, better yet, be forced to put their season one Kalinda-esque PI skills to good use)?  Look out Cook County, things just got a little more interesting.

Of course, there is one other huge variable that comes into play with Chenoweth joining the cast.  It's no secret Christine Baranaski (Diane), Alan Cumming (Eli) and Graham Phillips (Zach) are all accomplished singers.  Is it wrong to hope for at least one scene in season four involving a singalong?  Karaoke anyone?

Kristin Chenoweth, Tony and Emmy Award winner, is best known by TV audiences for her roles on the West Wing, Pushing Daisies, Glee, and most recently, GCB.  Of course, long-time fans of Chenoweth (a category where I happily find myself), knows her best from her acclaimed Broadway roles in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Wicked and Promises, Promises.  You can follow Kristin Chenoweth on Twitter @kchenoweth.
